Mission

Founded in 1997, Puppies Behind Bars (PBB) trains prison inmates to raise puppies to be service dogs for the disabled and explosive detection canines for law enforcement. The puppies live in prison with their inmate puppy raisers from the age of eight weeks to eighteen months. To date, Puppies Behind Bars has successfully raised 79 guide dogs, 151 explosive detection canines (including a few personnel/suicide bomber detection dogs) and most recently, three service dogs. Our dogs currently work in 23 states and 14 countries around the globe. In connection with raising these special pups, inmates give and receive unconditional love, take on extraordinary responsibility and embrace opportunities to contribute to society rather than take from it--all while they prepare for their lives post-incarceration.
