December 3, 2012
What a year this is turning out to be for the work of Charity Navigator! We have already hit our target of evaluating 6,000 charities with a month to spare! In addition, we have also broken the 6 million mark for number of visits to our site this year. That is far more visits than we have EVER seen in our history - over a million more than last year alone! We believe that our core value of continuous improvement of our web site and rating system is bringing more people than ever to seek out our analysis.
To that end, we are also closing in on our last major goal for the year, to launch CN 3.0. As noted in my previous report, we sent out a draft of the rating tool to over 130 experts and advisors to get their reactions. The overwhelming majority are amazingly positive. For example, one expert said, “this is the most important work going on in the entire nonprofit sector”. We are both humbled and thrilled by the encouragement and support we are getting! Along these same lines, we are proud to announce that the Hewlett Foundation has doubled their grant to Charity Navigator in 2012 (totalling $200,000) for work on CN 3.0. That is a record amount of foundation support never seen before in our history. With Hewlett’s help, and yours, CN 3.0 is quickly becoming a reality. Our goal is to have the methodology up and at least a couple of charities reviewed on CN 3.0 by the end of this month. Stay tuned!
Since we are now in the heart of the holiday giving season, media interviews are off the charts and taking up much of my time as well as that of my colleague Sandra Miniutti (VP of Marketing and Chief Financial Officer - how’s that for a title!). You can see a sampling of the media stories in the Press Room of this site. Of course you can also see our holiday giving tips directly right here on our web site! In addition to this, media interest in our advice for donors giving to charities working to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy also has been a major emphasis of our work recently. Two recent example can be found here (radio) and here (tv).
This will be my last report before the end of the year. Therefore this is my last chance to urge you to make a charitable gift/social investment in Charity Navigator. We believe that our work is encouraging charities to become more efficient and effective than ever. It is also continuing to ferret out (better than ever!) the good and bad charities out there. As a result, we believe we are providing you, our users, with more and better choices for your charitable gifts/social investments than ever before. Please help us to continue to drive positive change and make the world a better place as our partner in this work.
Have a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones!
All the best,
