Cyclone Phailin struck the eastern coast of India on October 12, 2013 making landfall as the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. The storm brought winds as high as 136 miles per hour, torrential rain and a storm surge of 11 feet. Massive amounts of crops were washed away and thousands of homes were destroyed. More than a dozen people have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands have been evacuated, making this disaster one of the largest evacuations ever to take place in India. Not only are extensive communication and electricity lines down, but there are also concerns about the health and sanitation needs of a million people.
To the right, is a list of organizations supporting the relief and recovery efforts in the region. But before you pick a charity and make a donation, consider what it is that you want your donation to accomplish (such as emergency aid, medical assistance, long term relief) and be sure to select the charity offering that specific type of aid. To do that, simply click on the charity’s name and view its rating page (where you can learn about its Financial Health and Accountability & Transparency). Once you are satisfied with its rating, then you can jump to the charity’s website (we link to each charity’s site from its ratings page) to learn more specifically about the type of assistance the charity is providing in relation to the Cyclone Phailin.
