Charity Navigator Internship Program

 
 

We're looking for talented and ambitious interns to join our team. Charity Navigator Interns work hand in hand with Charity Navigator’s staff in our office in Glen Rock, New Jersey assisting with projects and processes that provide them with exposure to all facets of the organization.              

General Requirements:

  • Able to travel to our Glen Rock office
  • Able to commit 15-20 hours a week starting mid September until early December
  • Available to work the 15-20 hours at some point Monday-Friday between 9-5
  • Self starter than can work independently and on a team
  • Passionate about non-profits and Charity Navigator’s mission

Marketing Intern

Position Summary: This role is crucial for keeping the Charity Navigator community informed while spreading our message of “guiding intelligent giving” through social networks, media, campaigns, websites, blogs, etc. There are opportunities to develop skills in professionalism, media relations, writing, branding and marketing.  You will also be able to expand your writing portfolio.

Responsibilities: May include some or all of the following depending on the needs of the organization at the time the intern is available.

  • Writing content for blogs, website, and printed materials
  • Creating social media content to optimize each of our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, etc.) to engage with our community and grow our audience
  • Writing press releases
  • Maintaining a database of media coverage
  • Researching social media trends, top stories, etc.
  • Brainstorming marketing ideas/concepts
  • Business development and marketing support

Qualifications:

  • An advertising & public relations, communications or marketing major
  • You are professional in all your ways: written, verbal, presence
  • Bonus if you have some writing samples to show off your skills
  • Willingness to learn through independent study
  • Be a self-starter, detail oriented, able to take initiative, and take ownership of assigned work project
  • Be able to troubleshoot and provide creative solutions when obstacles occur
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Comfortable working in a small, friendly work environment

Graphic Design Intern

Position Summary: Here is your opportunity to put your creative talents to work, and learn more about the philanthropic sector.  Charity Navigator, a charity itself, rates charities to help donors make informed giving choices. As our graphic artist, you will execute our brand strategy and mission and immediately see the results of your work. You will leave this internship with a portfolio of work.

Responsibilities: May include some or all of the following depending on the needs of the organization at the time the intern is available.

  • Developing graphic material for web pages, blogs and social media
  • Designing logos and other graphics
  • Creating and updating marketing materials

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BA/BS degree or equivalent in Graphic Design, or other related major
  • Ability to think about product strategy and vision (what we build, not just how it looks)
  • Skills in graphic design
  • Creativity
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop
  • Working knowledge of Word & Powerpoint
  • Experience and understanding of HTML is a plus
  • Willingness to learn through independent study
  • Be a self-starter, detail oriented, able to take initiative, and take ownership of assigned work project

Business Development Intern

Position Summary: This role is responsible for creating, pitching, and maintaining relationships with API and other data sales clients.

Responsibilities: May include some or all of the following depending on the needs of the organization at the time the intern is available.

  • Researching companies and brands that would benefit from Charity Navigator’s data  
  • Cold outreach to potential new customers
  • Assisting in the management of and communication with our current API customers
  • Assisting in pitch process and deck creation
  • Some administrative work as necessary

Qualifications:

  • A business, communications or marketing major
  • You're professional in all your ways: written, verbal, presence
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic personality.  We want a go-getter!  
  • Comfortable talking with a leader of any company  
  • Willingness to learn through independent study

Web Development Intern

 

Position Summary: This position is for students who have a passion for web development. This position provides the opportunity to add valuable experience and practical knowledge to your resume. You will be working on projects that will be visible to the millions of visitors to charitynavigator.org. Candidates should demonstrate high level writing of HTML and CSS, have a basic understanding of Javascript and jQuery, and know their way around Photoshop and Web Development IDE’s.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist with strategic planning for website developments and improvements

  • Develop web applications with a high level of reliability, performance, and usability

  • Perform debugging, data analysis, and system analysis as required

  • Participate in website quality assurance activities, including code reviews, integration, regression, and performance testing

  • Provide exceptional customer service

Qualifications:

 

  • Student or recent graduate of web design and development/digital media/computer science or similar program

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities

  • Advanced proficiency in HTML, HTML5, and CSS (examples of work)

  • Familiarity with JavaScript, and Photoshop

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

User Experience Design Intern

 

We’re looking for someone who will help us get the research we need to make a clean, simple, and intuitive user experience.  

Responsibilities:

 

  • Fighting for the user: Everything we do should be in the best interest of people researching charities.

  • Interviews: Recruit, screen, and schedule volunteers for usability testing. You will facilitate interviews to improve user flows and inform new products and features.

  • Research: Field feedback from our users and then consolidate learnings in a way that empowers us to decide if we need more research or are ready to implement changes.  

  • Data: Help lead and report on small and large scale surveys.  

  • Customer service: Use your organization skills and love of efficiency to come up with better systems we can use to give quick responses to users who need help, or clearly communicate to other team members when we need them to help a user.  

  • Innovation: Follow the industry wide conversation on UX innovations and research methodologies.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Background in a social science (e.g., psychology, sociology, behavioral economics), design (arts), or a related field.  

  • Curiosity. What assumptions is Charity Navigator making in its product design? Where are we right, and where are we wrong?  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience conducting user research and testing, running social science experiments, or conducting interview or observations.

  • Great customer service skills and a confidence cold calling users.  

  • Strong visual design aesthetic.  

  • Prototyping experience.
