During the summer and fall of 2016, several powerful earthquakes struck Italy.
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Italian town of Amatrice on August 24. The powerful quake killed several hundred people, trapped many under debris and displaced thousands.
Two earthquakes hit Italy on October 26. The quakes - one a magnitude 5.4 and the other 5.9 – damaged buildings, electrical lines, and phone lines.
On October 30, Italy experienced a magnitude 6.5 earthquake - the strongest quake to hit Italy since 1980. It caused additional damage to the towns destroyed by the quake in August.
