Children's Charities Recognized for Financial Excellence

Charity Navigator and Hobbs Foundation Team Up Again to Evaluate Charities

MAHWAH, N.J. (February 1, 2009) – Seventeen children’s charities received ‘good’ to ‘excellent’ reviews of their financial health thanks to an ongoing collaboration between the Hobbs Foundation and Charity Navigator.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the Tampa-based Hobbs Foundation, known for its support of charities that benefit children, has partnered with Charity Navigator to expand the number of charities that it rates. As a result of the partnership, donors have free access to trusted analytical information on many of the best-known charities serving the needs of children in the south. In all, the Hobbs Foundation has provided funding for the evaluation of over 100  children’s charities. Charity Navigator had final say over which charities were included and the Hobbs Foundation had no input into the ratings.

Charity Navigator’s most recently analysis revealed that more than three quarters of the charities are in exceptional or good financial health. The six top-rated organizations --- Place of Hope, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida, Gwinnett Children’s Shelter, A Gift for Teaching, Adopt-A-Classroom, Children’s Dream Fund --- each received a four-star rating meaning that they operate in the most efficient and fiscally responsible way possible.

“Thanks to our continued collaboration with the Hobbs Foundation, grantmaking organizations and individual donors have gained access to unbiased data thereby enabling them to give with confidence to efficient charities,” said Charity Navigator president and CEO Ken Berger. “It is a pleasure to work with a foundation that is as committed to educating and encouraging donors to give generously as we are.”

The Hobbs Foundation believes in the importance of bringing accountability and transparency to the philanthropic sector. According to Russ Hobbs, president of the Hobbs Foundation, “Charity Navigator’s evaluations not only help donors make better informed decisions, but also benefit charities by shining the lights on the most effective children’s organizations. We are thrilled to be able to support the philanthropic community through our partnership with Charity Navigator.”

At Charity Navigator donors have the option to research not just charities located not just in the south, but in all 50 states as well as hundreds of organizations that operate internationally. The service also rates all types of charities, not just those that focus on children’s causes. Once donors identify well-run charities deserving of their support, the site offers the added convenience of online giving. The complete list of newly-added children’s charities, with accompanying financial data and ratings, can be found online at www.charitynavigator.org/HobbsFoundation.
