President & CEO's Report for May

May 1, 2009

I am happy to report that we have concluded our initial investigation into the possible outcome measurement tools that are available. I am also pleased that two of the tools show enough potential applicability to our evaluation system that we are hoping to test them on a small scale (provided we can get some funding!). Meanwhile, we will continue to dig deeper into the question of what other tools may be appropriate for us to consider. We also continue to meet with experts in the area who have offered to help in this quest.

Along the same lines, the second meeting of the Alliance for Effective Social Investing  was held this past month. We updated this group of outcome measurement experts on the efforts we have undertaken thus far and receive lots of encouragement. I was also appointed Co-Chair of the groups Operations Committee. This committee has a number of important recommendations to make because, as the number of people who have expressed interest in the work of the Alliance has continued to grow, we need to figure out how to be as inclusive as we can, while continuing to move forward. To learn more about the group you can visit the web site at http://www.alleffective.org/

I was also interviewed once again on FOX Business News and asked to comment on the charitable giving of the Obama and Biden families. As usual I barely had time to say a sliver of what I wanted to. I will be blogging on this soon because I believe it reflects the attitudes of our leaders toward charitable giving in general.

Looking ahead, I have been invited to speak at an event called, “Valuing Impact” which will be held on May 19th in London. Please stop by and say hello if you are in the area! Personally, this will be the first time I have been in England (or all of Europe for that matter). If you are wondering who pays for these out of country trips, rest assured it isn’t Charity Navigator!

All the best,

Ken Berger
