President & CEO's Report for August

August 5, 2009

If you would like to learn more about Charity Navigator, why independent evaluation of nonprofits is so important and two of the most promising tools we are considering to help us more clearly identify high performing nonprofits, check out this webinar recording from a presentation I made recently.

We also had our first expert participant weigh in on our Open Forum on Outcomes, his remarks, my reaction and interesting comments from our blog readers can be found here.

Another meeting of the Alliance for Effective Social Investing was held last month. We now have so many people expressing an interest in participating that we need to establish membership criteria (it is getting harder and harder to find a big enough place to meet!). The Alliance leadership is hoping to develop a framework we can all agree upon regarding the critical elements that a social investor (a donor with their eyes wide open) must consider when making their decision to invest in an organization. We at CN believe that there are three core components for making a wise social investing decision – financial health, accountability and the potential for creating social value. The aforementioned webinar covers this topic as well.

Speaking of wise social investing, I have mentioned before our continuing efforts to diversify our funding so we can continue to improve our rating tools and expand the number of charities we evaluate. You are clearly responding to the call, as is evident from the tremendous increase in donations we have received in recent weeks. This month we implemented a “page overlay” which explains our need for your support. Thanks to all of you who have stepped up to the plate!

All the best,

Ken Berger
