I also was looking for a charity that didn't have a lot of administration costs. What I found was a relationship. I have contributed monthly for over 3 years now in the name of a beautiful little girl that lives by the dump. I wanted a charity that would let me contact my child. Safe Passage makes sure Maylyn gets my letters and gifts. They send me a picture of her with my gifts and forward her letters with a translation. My husband and I went to Guatemala and a representative gave us a tour, took us to Maylyns home, and took us shopping with her and her Mother. Safe Passage depends on volunteers and welcomes short timers along with long term volunteers. I plan on seeing this child through her childhood. I have recommended this charity to many people.

One of my two Favorite Charities

One day I was looking for a charity where, frankly, the CEO didn't make more money than I. I stumbled across this one and as I read I became more and more impressed with the operation, their fund raising, the job they do for garbage dump kids in Guatemala, their attempts to establish an endowment, their successes.

I have contributed monthly for perhaps two years now and I have them deduct the monthly sum from my credit card. It couldn't be easier. They give me what I need for the IRS.

I hooked the class I'm helping support with a class of a school for which I serve on the school board. Letters and photos are exchanged between the two and I'm sure our students get more motivation to take advantage of their education than the already-eager Guatemalan children.
