Small loans - big changes
Owens Acres gives to FINCA
Posted by OwensAcres | September 10, 2009 11:47:47 AM
As a woman-owned small business, I think it's important to help other women (around the world) start a business, that's why I donate to FINCA. My donations are small, but considering it only takes $50 to help a woman start her own business, I feel good knowing I may have helped dozens of women achieve independence and a better life. I could be greedy and use my profits for a newer car, bigger house, more stuff, but really, 'stuff' doesn't make you happy, helping others does. I like the cards they send and actually use them as it helps others understand what FINCA does and what their mission is. All CEO's need a salary and they work unbelieveable hours - think $300K is fairly reasonable. Thanks FINCA!

I know Rupert and he's worth many times his pay. For someone in the private sector running a 60MM international business, he'd be grossly underpaid. Please review other orgs in that size range and see where he ranks....

I agree that $317,K seems like more money than a charity should spend on a leader's salary. Why is it so high? I was set to donate until I saw that figure.
I like this organization,too.

I am concerned about the over 300,000 paid to the ceo. Does that seem high?
Thank you.
I am impressed.

I just received a letter asking for more help for Akghanistan. I have been giving ten dollars per month and I would like to increase it to twenty-five per month. Thank you, good wishes.
Wish they wouldn't send note cards

This seems like a worthwhile organization & I may donate to them later this year. However, I am very tired of getting note cards, calendars, address labels, decals, notepads, etc from various organization. I know I have received note cards from FINCA at least 4 or 5 times in the last year.

FINCA Donation Acknowledgments

I work for FINCA and am responsible for sending acknowledgment letters. We make every effort to produce these on a weekly basis. Further, we are required by law to provide donors with written confirmation of their gifts. If you do not receive a timely thank you letter from us, please let me know. I can be reached at (202) 682-1510, ext. 250 or via email at SLeurquin@VillageBanking.org. In addition to a letter, beginning in 2008, we will also provide a receipt at year end.

Does anyone know why FINCA doesn't issue receipts?

I worked through my employer to have this charity added to our registered gift matching organizations. Once that was done and I signed up to give them a bi-weekly contribution I recieved a very nice thank you from them. I will say that making the initial connection took some patience. I got the impression that their office staff is swamped with work to do, which may explain their relatively modest overhead ratio. That strikes me as a reasonable trade-off, but I can see how it could annoy some.

Regarding svato's post last month that FINCA doesn't acknowledge donations. I donated in April and received a letter of acknowledgment dated May 7 which included the statement, "For tax purposes please note that no goods or services were provided in exchange for this gift". I guess that leaves the score tied at one all.

Private donors who contribute to FINCA International DC should be forewarned that that otherwise high-rated organization does not acknowledge donations -- so one cannot make the donation tax-deductible. Asking for receipt gets no answer.

Is it really a loan?
Posted by maxodyne | October 19, 2009 6:07:31 AM
I have given to many charities over the years. But I have a question about FINCA: If it is a loan program, and if the loans are paid back, shouldn't the donors get paid back too at some point? Or is this part of the reason that the FINCA CEO is making over $300K per year? And this is a charitable person?
