Audubon: I am increasingly frustrated with both the frequency of your solicitations and what seems to be a somewhat underhanded technique of sending "replacement" membership cards that can make a person think it's time to renew their membership when it really isn't time. I have been a member for some 20 years and am seriously considering cancelling. Sincerely, M. Kafer
Need help in justifying continued membership

Dear Mr. Flicker, As a long time Audubon member I would like to continue to support your organization and its programs, but have a difficult time justifying doing so in light of the organization's negative showing against similar entities. With so many needs in the world, one must discriminate in the choice of charitable causes. Please help me understand by providing some information on what might be different about the national Audubon organization that causes its Charity Navigator rating to be so low in various areas, and how the organization is addressing these faults. Sincerely, C M Stiefel

Dear Audubon President, I am quite surprised that a national environmental organization like this ( of which I am a member) can not operate with a better efficiency rating than is posted on the Charity Navigator web site. I would appreciate it if you would address this issue to help clarify what, if anything, is being done to better upgrade the Audubon rating amongst charities. Perhaps with the new year 2008 some changes could be made to be more efficient, more sustainable, more green, & less administratively top heavy, and less wasteful. Sincerely, Mari Hanley

Audubon member? yes, but there's better out there

With revenues of $113 MIL each year and a $300,000+ salary, Audubon hardly needs my money, but I'll remain a member at a basic level.
I've discovered a little modest enviro charity based in Tucson, the Center for Biological Diversity.
They don't brag much and don't send many mailers, and there's no freebies like calendars and backpacks. No six-figure salaries or fancy offices.
Often they stand alone in suing to protect the environment and wildlife.
I've been giving to enviro orgs since 1967, but CBD is the best I've found. I even made them the #1 beneficiary in my estate. Check 'em out.
