Fundraising expenses

For years I gave what I could to Hale House, even when I was a poor graduate student. I stopped because I was receiving so many cheap little gifts and chotschkes in the mail, it just started to seem like a waste of the charity's efforts and resources -- and I don't care if the goods were donated, what Hale House needs is money instead! Plus, the amount of paper included in each mailing was getting out of hand. I've begun to reward charities for their efforts to streamline operations and route the funding where it's most needed.
