As a way to save paper, can donors "opt out" of receiving certificates? How should I go about doing this?

Thank you. Theresa.

First, please accept sincere condolence upon the death of your father. Thank you for sharing his personal information pertaining to his military service as a U.S. Army Forces Far East veteran.

We are certainly pleased that you are considering designating the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust to receive memorial gifts on his behalf. Thank you.

It is our policy to acknowledge receipt of each gift that may be received on his behalf. In addition, as memorial gifts are received, we will also notify you to let you know that a donation has made along with the donors name and address.

I hope this information is helpful. Thank you again for your consideration.

My father was a retired USAFFE veteran who recently passed away in an accident. He was always a very proud veteran and wore his "trademark" beret daily until the day he died at 93, when he was hit by a car as he was crossing the street on his way to church. To honor him we woul like to redirect donations sent in his name to DAV Charitable Service Trust. Pls let me know what I need to do to go about doing this. Fm a Grieving daughter

Thank you for the time you took to comment. We sincerely appreciate your interest in our organization and the compassion you express for our country's disabled veterans and their families whom we serve.

However, neither the DAV National Organization nor the DAV Charitable Service Trust send watches or key chains. Perhaps you have confused the DAV with another veterans' service organization.

DAV is serious about keeping costs as low as possible. Be assured that gifts to our organization are used in support of service to America's disabled veterans and their families.

I chose to give to this charity for many good reasons. However, I don't like when charities send junk in the mail... we received a junky watch and key chain I believe it was. I really hate when charities send stuff, they should save the money and use it wisely. I don't any key chains, cards, watches, etc. Just more stuff for the landfill.

RE: Prepaid Envelopes
Posted by DAV  |  May 14, 2009 1:39:28 PM

On behalf of the Disabled American Veterans, thank you for taking time to contact us. We understand your comments regarding the use of postage stamps on our return envelopes.

We have many donors who prefer that we not include return postage; therefore, whenever a donor lets us know their preference in this regard, we code their record accordingly. If you would like your record coded for “no postage”, please provide your name and address and we will be happy to fulfill your request.

The DAV conducts extensive, continuing research to find the most efficient ways to raise the funds needed for our services to disabled veterans. Our testing includes all components… including stamps. Our goal is to discover what's working and how much each component adds to total contributions.

The components in the DAV mailing you received reflect what we've learned. For example, every dollar spent on postage stamps produces several dollars beyond what we would receive without those stamps. The same can be said of security envelopes and return address labels. Those who ultimately benefit from this testing are the disabled veterans we serve.

In all of this, the DAV is serious about keeping fund raising costs as low as possible. Frankly, we wish we could raise the needed funds with extremely simple, inexpensive mailings. But like other charities, we've found that people generally don't respond as well to such mailings. We'll continue to test less expensive mailings and whenever we find ways to cut costs without harming the level of donations, we take immediate action. Also, we do recycle any unused stamps that are returned to us. If you’d like to return any unused stamps, just send them to our mailing address:

DAV PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301

I hope this answers your concerns and that the DAV will merit your continued support. We are very grateful for your generosity as well as the time you took to express your feelings regarding this issue.

Prepaid Envelopes
Posted by sjf  |  May 12, 2009 6:13:20 AM

The one thing that has always bothered me about this charity is they always seem to send and envelope with stamps. I don't mind paying for the postage along with my donation. I know some charities have prepaid stamp on their envelopes along with a message that your stamp would be appreciated. Is there anyway to give back these envelopes since I don't use then?

In regard to your question concerning the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) national organization and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust the following information is provided. Organized in 1986, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust has a continuous historical relationship with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) national organization. Both entities are separate non-profit charitable organizations having their own tax-exempt status. As a Congressionally chartered veterans' organization, the DAV's tax-exempt status is established under Section 501(c)(4) rather than 501(c)(3). To most donors, this makes no difference; their contributions are deductible under Title 26 U.S.C., Section 170(c), just as they would be if the DAV were a 501(c)(3) organization. However, some who wish to support the DAV's mission, such as those who pledge gifts through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and other workplace giving campaigns, Matching Gift Programs and Charitable Gift Annuity Programs, require that their gifts go only to organizations classified under Section 501(c)(3). To meet the needs of these supporters, the DAV Charitable Service Trust was set up under Section 501(c)(3). Gifts to the Trust are also deductible under Title 26 U.S.C., Section 170(c). Once the Trust was founded, it presented the added advantage of assisting us in expanding the traditional services offered by the DAV.

The physical address location of both entities is: 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076. P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 is the mailing address for both entities. For additional information on both entities, please visit www.dav.org or www.cst.dav.org. Thank you for your inquiry.

Which DAV Is This?
Posted by DAV  |  May 6, 2009 6:24:08 AM

Yes, the DAV Charitable Service Trust is directly affilated with the Disabled American Veterans National Organization.

The Trust is a key factor in helping the DAV develop resources to meet the needs of America's disabled veterans and their families.

The physical address of DAV National Headquarters, which houses the administrative offices of the National Organization and the Charitable Service Trust, is 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY. However, our mailing address is the P.O. Box in Cincinnati. Cold Spring, KY is a suburb, just a few miles south of Cincinnati.

Considering the large volume of mail DAV both sends and receives and at the recommendation of the U.S. Postal Service, we use the facilities of the largest postal facility in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Posted by DAV  |  April 28, 2009 6:30:04 AM

The DAV Charitable Service Trust gratefully accepts gifts to commemorate special occasions including weddings. And, as reflected on Charity Navigator, the Trust is recognized as a 4-star charity, and mindful of expending our funds for the specific purpose of services to America's disabled veterans and their families.

In appreciation of special occasion gifts like the one you are considering and to inform your guests of your unique gift, we may be able to accommodate by providing a table placard for placement on guests' tables, one per table.

Thank you for your consideration. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the DAV Charitable Trust at cst@dav.org or toll-free 877-426-2838 ext. 3316.

Address Labels
Posted by DAV  |  February 19, 2009 6:58:22 AM

Yes, the DAV Charitable Service Trust is directly affiliated with the DAV National Organization, which sends the address labels. The Trust was set up to receive assist donors who wish to contribute in support of DAV's mission of service to America's disabled veterans and their families through special giving arrangements. Neither DAV nor the DAV Charitable Service Trust are affiliated with Paralyzed Veterans of America. Thank you for your consideration.

Is this the DAV from whom we always get address labels? I also get some from Paralyzed Vets of America, who appear to not have nearly as good a rating. I prefer to give my donations to groups who are actually HELPING and not just coniving to separate me from my hard earned cash.

Neither the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) National Organization nor the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust is affiliated with the Disabled Veterans Association to which you refer. And, we know nothing about them.

DAV is entirely separate from other veterans' organizations and is the only one chartered by Congress to provide service to all disabled veterans, regardless of their disability.

It is correct that the Trust does not have paid employees. The Trust's Administrator is an employee of the DAV National Organization and serves the Trust on a part-time basis. The Trust reimburses the DAV for a portion of the Administrator's salary and benefits annually.

The DAV Charitable Service Trust focuses primarily on the disbursement of its contributions for the purpose intended -- supporting service programs for America's disabled veterans and their families.

The DAV Charitable Service Trust is affiliated with the DAV National Organization but is a separate entity. The Trust accepts direct contributions. The Trust's business office is located at DAV National Headquarters in Cold Spring, KY.

Thanks for your consideration.

My 86 year old father, a retired veteran, is deeply concerned about the toll of our current wars, and wants to help financially, but cost effectively . At the same time, he is besieged by appeals from dubious organizations like the ones run by Roger Chapin. He asked me to do some research. CharityNavigator.org gives the DAV Charitable Service Trust good marks and a .4% fundraising percentage. Am I correct in assuming that low percentage is because the revenue comes from sources like CFC?

The 2006 DAV annual report lists fundraising costs at 21.4%. Is there a way for an individual to give directly to the Trust? All phone numbers and donation links seem to go to the DAV national organization.
