Spend More & Address Long-Term Problems

FMSC is a typical feel good organization. It gives people a hands-on experience that makes them think they are changing the world when, in fact they are only feeding someone for a day. FMSC has assets they should be spending to effect long-term change that could end hunger. They also fail to mention that their costs are low because they piggy-back on other agencies, bringing in food to places where other agencies are doing the long-term, costly work.
These guys are good!

I had the good fortune to travil to Haiti with these folks some time ago. They really do what they say: feed starving children! They do it well, and they do it efficiently.
A special experience

I've had the pleasure of packing food at two of the sites in the Minneapolis area with my daughter and her friends on two of my visits to her. It was especially rewarding when the other packers were a class of eleven year olds, who were highly motivated to be very productive. Great fun and a wonderful learning experience for us all. My 30 something daughter was delighted when she was mistaken for an eleven year old.
little more spending needed

I would just like to see a bit more spending. Assets are over 4 1/2 million dollars. Thats extrememly high on revenues of almost 8 million. It may be that they just had two good back to back years.
I'd like to see the spending this year. Those assets need to come down, in a more appropriate line with the revenues.
What a Blessing

I've had the blessing of packing food twice. Once on my birthday at the Aurora, Il, site and at a mobile unit in Lansing MI, this summer. I hope to get a mobile unit in my area next year, and involve my entire county in this mission. They use their resources wisely and this makes it a privilege to give.
A rewarding volunteer experience

Heard about this charity when our work team volunteered for the afternoon. It was a tremendously rewarding experience knowing that your efforts were directly helping save starving children.
I plan to return for "walk in" nights and hope to form a group to volunteer on a monthly basis.
Great Charity

I volunteered as a high school student 8 years ago and saw first-hand how efficiently they accomplish their mission of feeding starving children. By relying on volunteers to carry out the vast majority of the work, they limit expenses and also provide an eye-opening experience to those that work in the meal-packing plant. I no longer live in the Minneapolis area, but this global-minded organization is still my number one charity to donate to.

Executive director salary too high
Posted by rustoleum01 | October 30, 2009 6:31:30 AM
I like this organization a lot, and to clear up a misstatement from a comment by "Cold Mama", children who benefit from FMSC are put on long-term eating programs and not just fed once.
But my problem with this and some other charities is the salary paid to those at the top. According to Charity Navigator, FMSC executive director, Mark Crea, makes $115,000 per year (2.22% of FMSC's expenses). That's way too high. I think that salary needs to drop significantly. How can Crea ask others to dig deep if he is taking such a big salary?
