Mission

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia was founded in 1812 for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning. Opened to the public in 1828, the Academy is the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the Americas and is a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research. The Academy has facilities devoted to research, including the Center for Systematic Biology and Evolution (CSBE), the Patrick Center for Environmental Research (PCER), and the Ewell Sale Steward Library. Education is also central to the Academy's mission; a wide variety of services and resources for schools, home schooling families, youth camps and educators are provided each year.
