Mission

The Sphinx Organization was founded in 1996 to help overcome the cultural stereotype of classical music, and to encourage the participation of Blacks and Latinos in the field. Our mission is threefold: to increase the participation of Blacks and Latinos in music schools, as professional musicians, and as classical music audiences; to administer youth development initiatives in underserved communities through music education; and to promote the creation, performance, and preservation of works by Black and Latino composers. Since our founding, Sphinx has reached over 65,000 students with educational sessions and more than two million individuals through national broadcasts; provided over $190,000 in instruments to young minority musicians; awarded over $1.6 million to competition semi-finalists; and facilitated over 190 Laureate performances.
