November Newsletter: How You Can Get Biggest Bang for Your Holiday Donation
The time between Thanksgiving and New Years is known as the traditional philanthropic giving season. It is a time when charities ramp up their appeals and donors give more attention to their charitable pursuits. While the recession is likely to have a dampening effect on holiday donations, we know that many of you will still want to give. To help you give with confidence, Charity Navigator has published a Holiday Giving Guide. It contains:
- Giving tips
- A roundtable discussion with charity leaders
- A list of the highest and lowest rated charities
- Giving facts
President’s Report
The holiday season is fast upon us and our web traffic is up significantly. We believe this reflects the growing trend of donors to demand independent and objective data to assist them in making their decisions regarding supporting a charity.
I am amazed when experts and charity leaders question whether or not donors/social investors care whether or not a nonprofit is having any meaningful impact. As a result, when asked to write an essay on the subject for McKinsey & Company, I turned the tables on the “thought leaders”. You can read the essay here.

FAQ: How can I donate goods, such as books, cars and food, instead of cash?
Many charities are equally grateful to receive gifts of cash as they are donated goods. We recommend that you use our site as a tool to find a well-run charity in your region. Then, contact that charity directly, using the information we provide, to determine if the organization is interested in receiving your goods. Visit our Tips and Resources to learn if your donated goods qualify as tax-deductible and to access more tips for giving goods.
