06/02/2015-08/01/2018: Moderate Concern Advisory

In accordance with our policy for removing CN Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Moderate Concern CN Advisory for SourceAmerica on August 1, 2018, because the CN Advisory has been in place for more than a year (since June 2, 2015).

Charity Navigator had published a Moderate Concern CN Advisory on SourceAmerica because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • On April 19, 2015, The Virginian-Pilot reported on the charges of improper conduct allegedly taking place at SourceAmerica, in an article titled, "Lawyer: Nonprofit firm rigged bids on jobs for disabled." For this reason, we have issued Moderate Concern CN Advisory as the allegations have yet to be confirmed. For more information regarding this matter, please see The Virginian-Pilot article.

    Charity Response

SourceAmerica has provided Charity Navigator with the following response:
"The allegations being made against SourceAmerica in this news article are one-sided, uncorroborated, and without merit. SourceAmerica complies with all requirements related to the administration of the U.S. AbilityOne Program. SourceAmerica is aggressively taking steps to protect its legal rights and reputation in the related litigation. There are a number of checks and balances in place to ensure that U.S. AbilityOne projects/contracts are allocated properly, including a final review and decision by the U.S. AbilityOne Commission before the Commission allocates a project/contract to a nonprofit. There are clear policies/procedures in place that separate SourceAmerica Board of Directors from individual project/contract recommendations. SourceAmerica is deeply committed to the U.S. AbilityOne Program and its mission to provide employment for tens of thousands of people with significant disabilities every year. SourceAmerica has addressed the false allegations repeated in these stories in the statements available HERE on SourceAmerica's website."
