    Statement in Response to the Current Tax Bill

     

    Statement from Michael Thatcher, President & CEO of Charity Navigator, in response to the Senate-passed tax bill and its potential impact on the nonprofit sector: 

     

    July 1, 2025, New York, NY – 

     

    Charity Navigator has serious concerns about the bill the Senate passed this morning. Although we are grateful for the removal of some harmful provisions, this legislation still poses a dual threat: it risks diminishing charitable giving while simultaneously increasing the burden on nonprofits as programs like SNAP and Medicaid face deep cuts.

     

    This creates a double bind. Nonprofits will be expected to do more with fewer resources while also navigating new challenges, such as the reinstated tax on transit benefits and expanded taxes on executive compensation. At a time when communities need nonprofits most, the sector simply cannot afford to be stretched any thinner.

     

    To donors: Please continue to stand by the causes and charities you support. Your generosity powers their work, and now more than ever, they need your help to meet rising demand and navigate new challenges. If a nonprofit has made a difference in your life, we invite you to share your story. Your voice can help inspire others to give.

     

    To nonprofits: Keep showing up for your communities, and don’t hesitate to share the good you do. Speak up. Advocate for your mission. Your voice matters, and your work is essential.

     

    To lawmakers: Ensure tax policy strengthens — not weakens — our nation’s nonprofit infrastructure. Protect charitable giving incentives, remove unnecessary operational burdens and preserve the capacity of nonprofits to serve communities in crisis.

     

    Giving is American, and this essential national value sets us apart globally. Strong, trusted charities help keep our nation whole. That tradition must not only endure, it must be protected.
