    Culture & Community

    We assess charities' overall culture and connectedness to the constituents and community they serve.

    Donors can use the Culture & Community beacon to gain insight into how organizations listen to their constituents, utilize the feedback collected to foster impactful programs and services, and sustain a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace culture. 

     

    The importance of implementing practices that contribute positively to an organization's overall culture, both internally and with respect to community engagement, has drawn much attention from donors, experts, and sector leaders who underscore its value to the charity's overall health and capacity for mission success. Positive organizational health and strong engagement with the charity's constituent populations are critical to the implementation of high-quality and impactful programs. 

    How We Assess Charities' Engagement with Their Constituents

    Constituent Feedback

    Charities with strong feedback practices are often more effective and provide higher-quality programs. This metric assesses the extent to which the charity collects and utilizes feedback from its beneficiaries to improve program outcomes. We've partnered with GuideStar by Candid to survey organizations about their feedback practices.

     

    Organizations are encouraged to fill out the How We Listen section of their Candid profile, and we provide full credit to organizations that do. 

    Commitment to Equity

    Strong equity, and inclusion practices help foster a positive workplace culture and, in some research, have been found to enhance a nonprofit’s decision-making, staff motivation, innovation, and effectiveness. We've partnered with Candid to collect data on charity equity strategies and provide a score on the number of strategies an organization has adopted. At this time, charities are not faulted, and their scores are not negatively impacted if they do not provide data for this metric, or if they currently have not adopted any strategies. 

     

    Organizations are encouraged to fill out the Equity Strategies section of their Candid profile developed by Equity in the Center.
