Black History Month: 100 Years of Innovation and Community

Celebrate 100 years of Black History Month by discovering life-changing innovations and practical ways to support Black-founded charities and businesses year-round.

This February marks a special milestone: 100 years of celebrating Black history in the United States! It’s a time to honor the incredible leaders and inventors who shaped our world, while reflecting on how we can support the next generation of changemakers.

For many of us, the best way to celebrate is by taking action. Whether you have five minutes to amplify a voice or a few dollars to fuel a mission, your support helps build stronger, more vibrant communities for everyone.

From historical blueprints to modern movements

Black history isn’t just a collection of events; it’s a masterclass in social innovation. Long before the "startup" era, Black inventors were breaking systemic barriers with limited resources — the same spirit found in today’s grassroots nonprofits:

    • Engineering Public Safety: Garrett Morgan’s three-light traffic signal wasn’t just a gadget; it was a vision for safer, more navigable cities.
    • Democratizing Technology: By perfecting the carbon filament, Lewis Latimer made light accessible to the masses, mirroring today’s efforts to close the digital and resource divide.
    • Ensuring Health Equity: Dr. Patricia Bath’s laser eye surgery innovations paved the way for modern Black-led health organizations fighting for medical accessibility.
    • Advancing Security Technology: In 1966, Marie Van Brittan Brown created the first home security system, the foundation for the smart cameras we use today.

6 Simple ways to support black communities

If you’re looking to turn your inspiration into action, here are a few impactful ways to get involved:

    1. Support Black-founded charities: One of the most effective ways to give is by donating to organizations led by the people they serve. These charities often have the best first-person insights into what their neighborhoods need most.
           a. Take a look at the Black-Founded Charities and Scholarships and Education for BIPOC Students lists to find highly rated charities making a difference.
    2. Consider recurring giving: Many charities rely on steady, predictable funding to keep their programs running. Setting up a small monthly donation can provide the stability these organizations need to plan for the future.
    3. Shop Black-owned businesses: Economic support is a powerful tool. Whether it’s a local coffee shop or an online boutique, supporting Black-owned businesses helps local economies thrive.
    4. Volunteer your time: Many local mentorship and education programs look for volunteers. Volunteering for Black initiatives allows you to share your skills directly with youth and aspiring professionals.
    5. Raise awareness: Use your voice! Raising awareness of the contributions of Black inventors, scientists, authors, and others helps others learn and may inspire them to take action.
    6. Get involved locally: Look for community projects, town halls, or local policy discussions. Your support at the local level can lead to lasting, positive changes right where you live.

    Making a difference beyond February

Black History Month is a wonderful starting point, but the work of building strong, vibrant communities continues every day of the year. When our calendars turn to March, the local organizations and businesses we’ve celebrated still need our partnership to thrive. Choosing to stay involved through monthly giving or consistent support is a simple but profound way to transform a yearly tradition into a lasting impact.
