The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year
Once upon a time (in 2022), in the heart of the Upper Valley region, Vital Communities found itself in need of a new strategic plan.
Recognizing our commitment to inclusivity (which was formalized through a mission amplification statement in 2020), we embarked on a journey to slow down and expand our strategic planning process. We knew that to effectively serve the diverse communities we represent, it was crucial to incorporate as many perspectives as possible. With an understanding that true power lies in collaboration, and that real progress could only be achieved by bringing together voices from all walks of life, we committed to an equity-centered approach.
So, we set out on a mission to engage community members, leaders, and organizations in a meaningful dialogue. We hosted board and staff meetings, organized internal and external focus groups, and conducted surveys to ensure that everyone had a chance to share their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations. We actively reached out to communities that had previously been underrepresented in their decision-making processes, ensuring that their voices were not only heard but given weight in shaping the organization's future.
The expanded strategic planning process required patience, as it took time to solicit and analyze so much feedback. But we recognized that this was a necessary investment, one that would yield dividends in the form of a stronger region.
Throughout the process, we worked closely with local partners, community leaders, and experts in equity-centered practices, seeking guidance on incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into all of our programs, policies, and initiatives.
As the strategic planning process unfolded, we witnessed the transformational power of collective wisdom. New ideas, innovative approaches, and collaborative projects began to emerge.
In the end, we discovered the strength in slowing down.
