Together with senior leadership of our partner organizations, we manage a training center that provides both classroom and real-world advocacy and organizing training as well as professional development to both experienced and entry-level staff of the Public Interest Network. This past June, with our support, the Student PIRGs launched our New Voters Project Civic Leadership Program to provide students with the skills, training and resources to mobilize their campuses for the midterm election and beyond. 50 students graduated from our inaugural Civic Leadership Certificate program. These students represented 29 four-year universities, 12 community colleges, and three high schools in 17 states. Participants learned how to create a campus civic engagement action plan, run a voter engagement event and reach their peers using grassroots organizing skills.

The Student PIRGs' New Voters Project, a joint project of PIRG New Voters Project, Inc. and the Center for Public Interest Research, is America’s oldest and largest nonpartisan youth voter mobilization program. Since 1984, we’ve helped to register over 2 million young people and made more than 3 million Get out the Vote contacts reminding young people where, when and how to vote. Data from Tufts University's National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement shows that students turn out when we invest in programs that engage them. That’s why our work at private schools, public schools, community colleges & minority-serving institutions focuses on direct peer-to-peer engagement. 85% of young people our New Voters Project helped register in 2020 and 76% of young people contacted in our peer-to-peer program turned out to vote. And in 2020, campuses with a PIRG club or chapter turned out at a 6% higher rate than the national average—meaning 89,000 more young voters.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, we moved quickly to put the health and safety of the public and our staff first. Two years later, we continue to limit our in-person outreach and indoor event attendance to what is both safe and important to attend. As of September 2022, we have not required staff to return to offices to work. We're heartened by our success moving completely online with our industry-standard classroom training program for our staff and our broader movement, as evidenced by the results generated by projects such as the Student PIRGs' New Voters Project. Training digitally enables us to pull in advocacy and organizing experts from around the country—and even sitting members of Congress—to share winning approaches to making social change. We've also developed and refined online peer-to-peer outreach models capable of mobilizing thousands in a campus setting while prioritizing students' health and safety.
