Mission

The mission of the Nonhuman Rights Project is to secure fundamental legal rights for nonhuman animals whom the law has long treated as mere things rather than beings who matter. We are the only civil rights organization in the U.S., working to secure legal rights for nonhuman animals through groundbreaking litigation. Our work normalizes the concept of legal rights for nonhuman animals in legal, policy, and public discourse. We employ two main tactics in pursuit of our mission: 1. Strategic litigation to establish precedent, and 2. Education and communications targeting branches of government, academia, and the broader culture to shift legal and public opinion about animals

Goals

1.Continue filing habeas corpus petitions seeking recognition of the right of our nonhuman animal clients to be free from exploitative captivity.
2.Continue research intended to confront fundamental systemic barriers within the legal system that prevent nonhuman animal access to the justice system.
3.Utilize professional public opinion research tools to gain insight into the underlying knowledge and beliefs that shape current positions on rights for nonhuman animals and to identify the content we should deploy to positively shift these beliefs in our favor.
