Mission

Founded in 1922 and renamed after Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center celebrated 100 years of service to the community in 2022. The mission of the MLK Community Center is to nourish, educate, and support Newport County, Rhode Island residents to improve their economic, social, and physical well-being. The Center works to build a strong and inclusive community where all people are empowered to be self-reliant and to live their best quality of life. The MLK is an independent not-for-profit and only 2.5% of our budget comes from federal, state, or local funding. Last year, the MLK served 8,706 clients, the most in its history, and 8% more than the prior year.

Goals

1.Increase hunger relief via added meal programs, increased fresh produce distribution, cooking & nutrition classes in English/Spanish to reduce food insecurity & increase access to healthy food.
2.Meet community need for early childhood & out of school education by adding Spanish-speaking staff, increasing scholarship $, and enriching programming for literacy, math and social/emotional health.
3.Expand our bldg via a $7M campaign. $144K meals provided in 2013 vs. $715K meals in 2020 in a too small inefficient bldg. Committed to remaining in our location, we exceeded our goal in just 8 months.
