Americares places a high priority on training and education for staff. Managers attend training sessions throughout the year to learn best practices in delivering feedback, coaching for success and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. Alongside this, the organization facilitates informal spaces to discuss these trainings and best practices with peers across departments and helps facilitate team building and leadership development sessions over the course of the year. The organization also invests in leaders at many levels by providing coaching opportunities across teams, disciplines and geographies. In 2024, Americares is planning to introduce a new development opportunity to cultivate future leaders. The Extended Leadership Team will nurture leadership growth by giving promising leaders the opportunity to work alongside the senior leadership team as they solve challenges and plan for change management.

A deeply collaborative organization, Americares works with a network of local, national and international health partners. Americares engages partners in program design and implementation, including capacity-building programs, training and mental health support for health workers. Americares publishes research in peer-reviewed journals and hosts thought leadership forums to raise awareness of medicine security, health equity and climate resilience. In recent years, Americares has participated in COP28, Climate Week NYC, the World Congress on Public Health, as well as events hosted by the American Public Health Association, the Clinton Global Initiative and other organizations. Americares is active with InterAction, National VOAD, Partnership for Quality Medical Donations and numerous professional organizations. Americares also has national and regional leadership councils that support the organization through philanthropy, advocacy and community events.

The ability to pivot quickly when disaster strikes is paramount in emergency response. At Americares, the Emergency Programs team responds to more than 30 emergencies worldwide annually, including earthquakes, floods and other disasters that strike without warning. In 2023, Americares quickly launched into action to meet the health needs after earthquakes in Afghanistan, Haiti, Nepal, the Philippines, Syria and Türkiye, wildfires in Hawaii and the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Israel and Gaza. At the same time, Americares continued to meet the health needs caused by the war in Ukraine, the crisis in Venezuela and climate change. Americares adapted its programming to meet the needs of partner clinics facing more frequent hurricanes, flooding, wildfires and heat waves. In 2023, Americares expanded its climate resilience work by beginning to work with U.S. clinics in Arizona, Florida and Louisiana to create customized heat action plans. Americares also adapts its ongoing health programs around the world to meet the changing health needs of local communities. In Haiti, which faced natural disasters, a resurgence of cholera infections and increased instability in 2023, Americares adapted how it provides training, medical equipment and facility improvements to health facilities. By expanding funding and technical assistance, Americares was able to extend its reach to support a wider network of health centers providing prenatal and newborn care throughout the southern peninsula, improving care for thousands of women in their reproductive years. In Tanzania, where Americares focuses on maternal and reproductive health, the team pivoted quickly in 2022 and 2023 to leverage their health and behavioral-change expertise to support the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the Mwanza and Shinyanga regions. The highly successful project increased vaccination rates from 34 percent in Mwanza and 24 percent in Shinyanga to 100 percent.
