Long Island Children's Museum (LICM) invites visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to explore freely, discover their passions, and appreciate the communities and world we share. First opened in 1993, LICM now serves more than 265,000 children and adults annually across the metropolitan region and is Long Island's most well-attended museum. It is home to 14 hands-on, interactive exhibit galleries, a 145-seat state-of-the-art theater and three classroom-size learning studios. Indoor and outdoor gallery spaces are interdisciplinary, age-appropriate, and intergenerational, fostering both independent and cooperative exploration, and encouraging concept development and skills building. Describe an investment in leadership
We applied for and have received a two year Succession Planning and Leadership Development grant from the federal Institute for Museum and Library Services that is designed to develop succession plans for the Museum President, Board Officers and Staff Department Heads. A strategic planning, organizational development consultant will guide the project and provide the leadership training. An evaluation consultant will evaluate the project and train staff in evaluation techniques. The purpose of this project is to provide leadership training for staff and board members to ensure a strong organization through leadership transitions. This grant requires a match and the Museum contributes significant staff time to this project. In addition, the Museum has sent staff to multi-day Leadership Development Institutes and provided time for other staff to participate in multi-month leadership training programs.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
The Museum participates in American Alliance of Museums annual Museum Advocacy Day, involving training in advocacy & issues of national significance to museums. It also involves meeting with senators, representatives & their staff. The Museum has also engaged in strategic partnerships with high need school districts to address needs such as kindergarten readiness for immigrant families & a science partnership with a neighboring high need school district, serving all first, second & third grade students, teachers & families. Teachers participate in an advisory committee and help shape the project. A community initiative, LICM4all, works institution-wide to better serve children with disabilities and their families. Staff representatives from these organizations serve as project advisors. Also, several staff present at museum & education conferences, write articles for professional journals & serve on program committees of professional organizations.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The biggest external change that we have had to adapt to in the past year, has been continuing our recovery from the impact of COVID 19. The Museum was required to close to the public on March 13, 2020 for six months, and when able to open back up was required to limit attendance to 25% of capacity. The Museum's attendance related revenue comprises 60% of the total budget so all part-time, public facing staff had to be laid off. The Museum was successful in applying for and receiving federal SBA funds (Payroll Protection Program, EIDL, Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, and Employee Retention Tax Credits) and relief funds from federal cultural agencies (National Endowment for the Arts and Institute of Museum and LIbrary Services). This enabled the Museum to maintain all full-time staff who developed virtual programs for the general public and participants in our community initiatives. It also enabled the Museum to work on significant COVID protocols and building improvements so the Museum could slowly. successfully open back up to more of its visiting audience as allowed. The Museum is now back to 75% capacity visitation and just starting to get school groups. As we approach closer to a pre-pandemic normal, we have identified adaptations that have benefited the Museum and our audiences that we will keep. These include virtual outreaches offered in addition to our in person outreaches, school programs with activity kits delivered to our partnering schools, increased social media programming, and other virtual offerings for those unable to attend the Museum in person. The Museum continued its significant work toward applying for accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums during this time and was successful in accomplishing this in November of 2021. Only about 1,000 of the 30,000 museums in the U.S. are accredited by the Alliance, so we are very proud of accomplishing this award that recognized best practices in all aspects of the organization.
