The Chance Theater
Mission
Chance Theater is dedicated to the creation of exciting theatrical experiences, taking artistic risks, and collaborating with gifted and diverse artists on passionate and provocative plays and musicals. Our mission is to contribute to a more connected, compassionate, and creative community. We accomplish this by: -- producing powerful, socially-conscious, provocative, intimate theater experiences -- generating participation and dialogue between our diverse communities -- nurturing and supporting local artists - inspiring and empowering creative young minds -- promoting anti-racist and anti-oppression practices to ensure equity, diversity, and inclusion
Vision
We are dedicated to producing intimate live theater experiences that provoke dialogue, foster empathy, and create a stronger, more connected community. Our belief that theater is a “gym for empathy” drives us to tell bold, personal stories that engage our patrons in meaningful conversations about the human experience. Our artistic programming features a vibrant Main Series of five plays and musicals, a robust new works program, a theater for young audiences series, two holiday productions, community outreach program, and education programs reaching teens, teens on the spectrum and veterans. Above all, we are a gathering place for artists, audiences, and neighbors. From moderated post-show discussions for every Main Series production to meet-the-cast events for TYA and Holiday productions, we prioritize creating spaces where stories spark connections. Through our artistic vision, we seek to inspire compassion, provoke dialogue, and strengthen the community we proudly call home.
Goals
- 1.Our artistic programming features a vibrant Main Series of five plays and musicals, presented across two stages within the Bette Aitken Theater Arts Center: the 150-seat flexible Cripe Stage and the 50-seat proscenium Fyda-Mar Stage. Each season highlights regional and world premieres, reimagined classics, and productions that amplify diverse voices and perspectives.
- 2.One core strategy is our unwavering commitment to producing fresh, contemporary stories. Our On the Radar (OTR) New Works Program exemplifies this mission by providing established and emerging playwrights with access to a supportive community of artists and audiences, encouraging them to explore creative boundaries in a transformational environment that fosters artistic growth.
- 3.Chance has been a beacon for arts education and community engagement, empowering individuals from underserved and marginalized communities to share their stories and connect with others through the transformative power of theater. From at-risk teens and veterans to individuals on the Autism Spectrum, our programs provide a safe space for participants to “speak up” about their experiences.
