How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges to our fundraising efforts in 2020, with many individuals, foundations and companies donating less or not at all, or diverting their philanthropic giving towards frontline healthcare, basic needs, and other pandemic-related issues. Despite the difficulties, several key factors kept our agency financially healthy and strong. First, The NYSPCC received a Paycheck Protection Program loan, which enabled us to retain a full staff and conduct services. We also have an endowment, from which the Board of Directors authorized a portion of to help fund operational expenses, as well as the costs associated with transitioning all services from in-person to remote.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The NYSPCC’s clinical team rapidly transitioned all therapeutic counseling services to tele-therapy in March 2020, ensuring that services were not interrupted just because children and families were confined to their homes. Our clinical team provided them with the same level of care and engaged them in the same therapeutic activities, including talk, art and play therapy for children, and coaching and education for parents. As a result, children and families continued to heal. Our Training Institute also jumped into action by creating digital versions of all education programs, which were primarily conducted in-person prior to the pandemic. We are now able to provide virtual trainings for child sexual abuse prevention, child abuse identification and reporting, and managing secondary traumatic stress.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
While virtual appointments are a useful alternative for therapy during a pandemic, in-person visits are more effective for helping children heal from trauma. Therefore, now that rates of COVID-19 are on the decline, The NYSPCC is encouraging all children and families to attend appointments in-person. However, we also offer the option of virtual services, as needed. Giving clients the freedom of choosing when, where, and how to attend therapy appointments has led to improved participation and more positive outcomes. A blended therapy model also gives our therapists more tools and options, when considering what is best for each child and family. For example, we may suggest virtual visits when a child is immunocompromised or when a parent’s circumstances don’t allow for an in-person visit. Finally, since the future of COVID-19 and its variants remains uncertain, it will be helpful if our clients are prepared and able to shift back and forth between in-person and virtual visits with ease.

The work of The NYSPCC has not changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the majority of staff members now work hybrid schedules an will continue to do so indefinitely.

The NYSPCC provides therapeutic services for children and families, who have histories of abuse, neglect, and domestic violence, to support their healing and strengthen parent-child bonds. The NYSPCC also provides prevention programs and educational workshops to school children, parents, educators, and professionals who serve children. All the children and families The NYSPCC serves live in poverty, with more than two-thirds coming from households earning less than $20,000 per year. They are predominantly African American and Latino. The children and youth range in age from six months to 21 years; approximately 47% are male and 53% female

The children and families attending therapy through our clinical programs have experienced severe trauma. We regularly request and respond to their feedback to improve their feelings of safety and trust, which in turns improves their ability to engage in the therapeutic process.

Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
The NYSPCC’s Therapeutic Supervised Visitation Program (TSVP) enables parents with histories of abuse, neglect, and domestic violence to safely spend time with their children, while improving parenting skills and nurturing parent-child bonds. In March 2020, The NYSPCC transitioned the TSVP from in-person to virtual, which was vital for keeping families connected throughout the pandemic. However, virtual visits do not adequately replace the in-person experience, and parents often expressed their desire to hug their children. With COVID still a concern in fall 2021, The NYSPCC designed safety protocol and expediated the transition of all families back to in-person visits. This is a critical step forward in restoring emotional attachment and reducing the trauma of separation.

NYSPCC leadership engage with external entities to mobilize support for our mission and enhance services within the larger child protection field. • Members of our Training Institute and clinical team work with other service providers to make referrals, share resources, and ensure that our clients’ needs are being met. • Our senior staff regularly publish articles and present at national conferences to share best practices. • Our Executive Director sits on the Board of The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and members of our clinical team participate in the Supervised Visitation Network. • Our Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director/Legal Counsel regularly meet with city and state legislators to improve laws and policies that protect the safety of children. • Our Development and Communications team regularly hosts events and publishes social media posts, newsletters, and e-blasts to raise awareness about child abuse and The NYSPCC’s services.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
As the pandemic presented on-going challenges in 2021 and 2022, The NYSPCC continued to provide child abuse prevention and treatment services, while also adapting our work to address changes happening in the larger community. The NYSPCC's Training Institute expanded its scope of its trainings to reduce secondary traumatic stress. In addition to training child protective services workers, we are now also reaching teachers, guidance counselors, and law enforcement, who faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic. These professionals now have enhanced coping skills and are providing higher quality services for children. Also, at the request of the Commissioner’s Office at New York City's Administration for Children's Services (ACS), The NYSPCC developed a grief counseling program for ACS-involved parents, who are experiencing traumatic stress due to the death of a child or other serious critical incident involving their child. NYSPCC therapists are helping parents to develop coping skills to manage their grief, so they can heal. The NYSPCC also set it’s sights beyond the children and families we serve, by joining with the American Professionals Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) in a national effort towards ending systemic racism in the field of child maltreatment. The NYSPCC co-sponsored APSAC’s National Colloquium “Promoting Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Across Disciplines and Organizations Addressing Child Maltreatment,” where six members of our staff presented. Dr. Mary Pulido, The NYSPCC's Executive Director, was also asked to join the Commission to Eliminate Racism and Systemic Bias in the Child Maltreatment Field. Furthermore, our Board and The NYSPCC Team are developing strategies that will achieve a more diverse Board and staff.
