Mission: A Chance In Life has changed the lives of over 40,000 at-risk youth through our Towns around the world. We serve refugee and migrant youth in Italy, poor and disabled youth in Ethiopia and children living in marginalized communities in India and Latin America.

Every year we give 4,000 children a chance to become responsible members of their own communities through a unique approach called self-government (Positive Youth Development). Self-government gives young people a voice in creating their future and supports them to develop as young leaders, taking shape differently in each country to best suit their culture and needs.

In 2020, on the occasion of our 75th Anniversary, we started our first program in USA. "The Village" is a youth center serving marginalized children in New York City. Based on the principles of Positive Youth Development, our center provides financial literacy courses, training, and most importantly a safe harbor to detached and idle youth.

A Chance In Life is a 501(c)(3) organization, with an IRS ruling year of 1952, and donations are tax-deductible.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

A Chance In Life applied for and received PPP funding and thus was able to retain a full staff. Because of government imposed school shut downs, many of our international programs were temporarily closed, and as a result, our programmatic expenditures decreased significantly. To that end, the percentage of general management expenses during the pandemic was much higher than is typical (20% versus 7% under normal circumstances).


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Due to government imposed shut downs, many of our international programs were forced to close temporarily. Wherever possible, we continued to provide education and supportive services remotely, and began offering emergency hunger relief and sanitation supplies to children and their families in the communities in which we work. We distributed food to more than 6,500 boys, girls, and families in Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, India, and Ethiopia.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

In addition to providing emergency food relief to children and their families, A Chance In Life also provided digital devices to program beneficiaries where possible to facilitate remote learning. In addition, we hosted a virtual fundraising event, which secured $625,000 to benefit our programs while keeping expenses very low.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Our emergency response to the pandemic, in which we were able to provide hunger relief, sanitation supplies, and digital devices, proved that we are a nimble organization and able to both generate funds rapidly as well as effectively get supplies into the hands of program beneficiaries quickly. We have applied the same model in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. We have also continued to address food insecurity among our target population, and have established a food pantry program on a permanent basis.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


In the last year, we have adapted to external changes both internally and externally. Internally, we have shifted to work from home as much as possible in order to ensure the safety of all team members. With the improving COVID-19 situation in the US, we have opened the office again and continued to be flexible with team members as they return to a balanced schedule between home and office. Externally, we have shifted our resources to support our programs abroad as their needs have changed. During the pandemic, many of our beneficiaries left the centers they were in and returned home to be educated and to live. We had to adapt and provide supplies to every child and their family. We provided internet, phones, electronic devices, and food to all the homes that needed them so that the children could continue their education with our program partners.
