Downtown Community Television Center
Mission
Founded in 1972, DCTV is one of the nation’s oldest and most honored nonprofit media arts centers. We believe that a diversity of voices strengthens democracy and enriches civic life, and our mission is to empower storytellers and communities of all backgrounds to amplify underrepresented stories in nonfiction media. Based in a landmark firehouse on the edge of Manhattan's Chinatown, our unique space offers filmmakers and film lovers a place to come together to learn, create, and share stories. Under one roof, DCTV offers free youth media programs, professional workshops, affordable production resources, and our award-winning documentaries. Firehouse: DCTV’s Cinema for Documentary Film presents premieres, community screenings, and conversations that connect filmmakers and audiences.
Vision
DCTV is a unique media arts organization working at the intersection of education, production, and exhibition. We seek to be a home of and for documentary filmmakers, creating lasting access and representation in documentary filmmaking by providing tools, training, and platforms that center diverse and marginalized voices. In a time marked by misinformation and deepening social divides, we aim to cultivate a more informed and connected public through media literacy, storytelling and civic dialogue. By providing opportunities for New Yorkers to learn media literacy, gain the tools to tell impactful stories, and watch documentaries that inspire dialogue around pressing social issues, we aim to empower communities of all ages and backgrounds to think critically, pursue truth, and create content that sparks social change, one documentary at a time.
Goals
- 1.Use documentary filmmaking as a tool to catalyze, inform, and empower communities to make positive social change, bridge economic and social divides, and promote understanding and tolerance.
- 2.Make media arts education accessible and affordable for diverse populations and underserved communities, in particular providing free educational opportunities to underserved youth in New York City.
- 3.Provide greater exposure to independent documentary films and filmmakers, and exhibition opportunities for the general public to watch meaningful films.
