HUNGER FREE AMERICA is a nonpartisan, national nonprofit group working to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food. We are both a direct service and advocacy organization - with each component strengthening the other. As a direct service provider, we assist low-income families obtain aid from government programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - formerly called the Food Stamp program - and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program so that people struggling to pay their bills have access to nutritious food. We also connect families nationwide with private food resources. Because our staff works daily on the front lines of hunger, and because we empower low-income people to speak out on their own behalf, that makes us one of the nation's most effective advocates for improved economic and public policies. HFA’s leadership is dedicated to ending hunger in the US. CEO Joel Berg is a nationally recognized leader, conducting and publishing original research on hunger in the US. Joel has been appointed by the NYS Governor to serve on the NYS Hunger and Food Policy Taskforce and helps shape our advocacy efforts at the local, state, and federal level for policies that will end hunger. We serve as a member of Healthy Food Community of Practice, a space for connection, learning, and resource sharing with a common goal; to help those facing food insecurity access and consume healthy foods. Our NYC based Food Action Board empowers low-income community members who have struggled with hunger to share their stories with the media to de-stigmatize food assistance programs and to advocate on their own behalf at the local, state, and federal level. We share these stories, along with important information for our community members and updates on our efforts to our social media to propel our movement.

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, we have been on the front lines of the hunger crisis, committed to assisting Americans experiencing food insecurity. We have continually provided free personalized assistance, even as our caseloads soared, to individuals in need of emergency food programs and public nutrition benefits assistance. HFA pivoted to a remote model at the start of the pandemic, providing our free confidential assistance via phone, text and video conferencing services. We continued to conduct outreach virtually to raise awareness of program modifications to encourage application for eligible families. As it is safe to do so, we have returned to in-person assistance. We still continue to provide remote help to those clients who are more comfortable with that mode of assistance. Even with a slight reduction in COVID infection numbers, 35 million Americans still struggle against hunger today. As one of the nation’s most effective organizations dedicated to ending hunger, Hunger Free America is committed to providing our innovative anti-hunger programs to all who need our assistance.
