In the past 18 months, The Family Center has convened regular meetings of executive and senior management with a consultant hired to support agency leadership in developing core values to guide staff evaluation and growth. The Family Center has also convened regular full staff meetings with a consultant to explore elevating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in our work and all aspects of agency culture, including staff and leadership development.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
The Family Center partners with both public and private entities across sectors in order to achieve our mission of strengthening New Yorkers and their families. Our expert staff participate in various coalitions and networks to represent our work and interests, e.g. NYC Community Board 3 and the NYC HIV Planning Council. Family Center staff have published extensively in peer review journals on research findings and outcomes of our work. In addition to providing various community groups with trainings on everything from legal to health matters, The Family Center also maintains a strong social media presence across platforms in order to promote our mission and work.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
As external factors like inflation, gentrification, lack of access to quality mental healthcare, and systemic racism continue impacting The Family Center’s client families and their children, our teams of expert staff remain committed to serving New Yorkers with our trauma-informed, anti-racist programming that is aimed at producing positive, sustainable outcomes for individuals, families and communities. In response to Covid-19, The Family Center (TFC) installed a new HVAC system to improve our office air quality, and created an anonymized master client email list to communicate with clients en masse during times of crisis; and we continue offering HIPAA-compliant virtual services and in-person services to clients. In response to the murder of George Floyd and our country’s legacy of systemic racism, TFC developed and has been implementing a Racial Equity Plan that contains benchmarks like hiring more staff of color to better reflect our client population.
TFC also continues responding to our community’s emerging needs, thanks to our strong leadership and sustainable financial standing. In response to the current opioid epidemic, our Article 32 NYS-licensed clinic for New Yorkers struggling with severe mental illness and/or substance misuse is an Opioid Overdose Prevention Program that conducts NARCAN trainings for TFC staff and clients, as well as the larger community. In the last fiscal year, our Board of Directors added two new BIPOC professionals who bring new skills and experience to our leadership. Finally, TFC has maintained most of our government and foundation funding, and took full advantage of other opportunities, including two rounds of PPP loans, to ensure that we continue our important work. We are confident in The Family Center’s financial position moving forward, thanks in large part to the strategic vision of our Board of Directors and executive staff leadership on issues like revenue diversification and service integration.
