Commonweal Conservancy Inc.
Mission
COMMONWEAL CONSERVANCY IS A NONPROFIT CONSERVATION-BASED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION.
Vision
Commonweal pursues its land conservation and community building work with the goal of creating places that people will love and protect for generations. It partners with organizations, professionals, community leaders, and volunteers to preserve and restore lands of ecological, cultural, and recreational significance. Commonweal will be extending the reach and impact of its work by acquiring more than 200 miles of wildlife corridors and trail networks to advance a continental protection effort, known as the Western Wildways Initiative. Within the borders of the preserve, we will be engaging residents and visitors in educational, experiential, cultural, and creative programming designed to foster a land ethic that will ensure the region’s permanent protection.
Goals
- 1.Commonweal creates opportunities for people to become engaged stewards and partners to the protection of wildlife habitat, cultural resources, and scenic open spaces. Working with K-12 schools, NM-based colleges and universities, tribal representatives, and local government, Commonweal will be offering educational and experiential programming to connect people to the places they love.
- 2.In the next five years, Commonweal will be building on the success of the GBP by partnering with an array of regional and national nonprofit organizations to advance the vision and ambitions of the "Western Wildways Initiative" - a continental-scale conservation initiative that aspires to link public and privately conserved lands from the Sierra Madre to the Canadian Rockies.
- 3.To sustain Commonweal's financial health and program strength, the organization is pursuing a $2.5M endowment campaign to underwrite a growing portfolio of conservation and educational programs. The Thaw Charitable Trust has pledged to match Commonweal's endowment raise of $1.5M with a grant of $1.0M. Other donors have pledged bequests of more than $1.5M to deepen the impact of our work.
