Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.
  • No: This charity either does not have a written donor privacy policy in place to protect their contributors' personal information, or the existing policy does not meet our criteria.

The privacy policy must be specific to donor information. A general website policy which references "visitor" or "user" personal information will not suffice. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Fundraising was limited compared to prior years, due to constraints in holding in-person fundraising events. Additionally, more Veterans and their families needed our financial assistance.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

One of the great benefits of our programs is getting Veterans and their families together. Veterans need to share time with people who have similar experiences and challenges. Getting together was severely limited. We gathered online, but online gatherings can be difficult for people with disabilities.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We created small ways to see each other in person safely, such as our care packages, "front porch photo ops" and outdoor small groups.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Families really enjoyed the care packages and small outdoor group activities. We will likely continue these.

Describe an investment in leadership

One of our most effective leadership develop activities is our Operation Giving Back internships. OGB interns are Veterans or spouses of Veterans who learn career skills on the job while serving other Veteran families. Our OGB interns are the key to our success on the local level as they develop and expand our regional programs. Interns who are veteran spouses learn new job skills for careers that offer the flexibility they need as primary household earners and primary caregivers for their Veterans at home. Veterans, also learning these skills, often turn their skills into advocacy activities. Our interns have become staff members and board members at Operation Second Chance as well as their own business owners. We are proud of the way our interns have used their time to further their careers, serve other Veteran families, and build capacity at Operation Second Chance.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Advocating for the needs of Veterans is one of the key facets of our mission. Our founder, board members, and participants are frequent speakers and presenters on the Veteran experience at dozens of events and meetings annually. We also amplify Veteran voices on our social media and web site. We have regional advocacy activities in the DC area, Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Kentucky, New York and other locations. Partners vary by community and include media outlets, corporate sponsors, service clubs and others. We partner with local social service agencies who refer Veterans for care in one or more of our programs.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Like most organizations, Operation Second Chance, had to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic. One of our greatest strengths is how we bring together Veteran families for peer support and shared experiences. Unfortunately, this was not possible early in the pandemic due to the COVID-19 shutdown and the reluctance to gather individuals who have significant health risks even after lockdown mandates were lifted. Our staff and interns got creative and found ways to forge personal connections during this time, including the following: Delivering care packages for shut-in families, including games and puzzles, school supplies, healthy snacks, hygiene supplies and other goodies. Hosting "front porch portraits," where we went to Veterans' homes and staged creative family photos to share and enjoy. Hosting small, safely managed outdoor events for families to do crafting and other fun activities. We also relied heavily on our virtual activities, including social media, Zoom and Facetime to keep our Veterans from feeling isolated, frustrated and alone. The pandemic also affected our fundraising, because we had to cancel several fundraising events earlier in the year. As we learned more about how to gather safely, particularly outdoors, we decided to continue with our largest fundraising event, the Ride Allegheny cycling event, which, as the name implies, is an outdoor bicycle ride. We encouraged all participants to use COVID-19 safety precautions when not cycling and not outdoors. The pandemic came at a time when we were bequeathed the funds to purchase a retreat property in Pennsylvania. We used this time to do renovations on the property in preparation for when we could finally start welcoming families for our retreats. The pandemic affected Veteran families, who struggled financially and requested help from our Essential Daily Assistance program. We succeeded in fulfilling 100% of requests at least partially, even during such a challenging year.
