This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Wildlife SOS reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Fundraising Capacity
Revenue
Grants Received
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Fundraising and education efforts were impacted as several foundations halted grant making and in addition, all of our in person events were cancelled. Compared to the prior year, in 2020 we had a 26% reduction in special event revenue and a 98% reduction in program revenue. We were able to apply for and received the PPP loan allowing us to keep regular staffing.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Due to Covid-19, we had to cancel our annual Founder's Trip to India which is a very hands-on educational opportunity for attendees as well as a revenue generator. We also canceled all of our in person fundraising and education events. In India, rescue operations for elephants continued but were hindered and delayed due to lock-downs. Wildlife rescue in India continued with all necessary precautions being taken.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We used this time as an opportunity to improve our internal processes, increase analysis to determine efficiencies and cut costs wherever possible. As grants from foundations and other non profits were reduced, we shifted our focus to online fundraising and individual donors. The pandemic gave us time to try new things - and ultimately, we ended up recognizing our strengths and were able to increase our revenues for the year beyond our expectations.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Our first ever annual strategic planning session with our India counterparts was a big hit and allowed for increased participation from both organizations - this will be continued. In addition, our new procedures for email communications and database management have become a regular part of our operations. And the expanded and revised recurring donor drive was so successful in 2020 that it will also continue in 2021.
