We also assume there is, in general, no slack capacity in the homeless shelter system. In the absence of a given shelter, beneficiaries would not be able to stay at another shelter because other shelters are assumed to have no beds to spare. The Friendship Mission's vision is to help men grown in community, regain their masculine identity and see their own immense self worth. Our reward is to see men go from hopelessness to hope as they find home together.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

The Mission works to support other community needs based non-profits when possible. Normally we receive donations of clothing, jackets and boots and we make all of these things available to others in the community. Mission staff is available for weekly presentations in houses of worship. We are currently developing and will launch radio ads, a new website and marketing campaigns for the coming year.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


During COVID it became increasing important that our residence not loiter in town and wander without purpose. We adapted by creating a firewood business that provided both an avenue for helping the general public with their heating needs through the hard work of our unemployed resident participants. The men split, stack and load the firewood once it arrives at the Mission. The wood is then sold to families for a very reasonable amount and the funds support the costs associated with the Mission. Additionally, the Missions makes in mandatory that residents provide 20 hours of volunteer service in our community at an authorized non-profit. This provides our residents with both a safe place to be in from the cold, around safe people and also gives them opportunity to give back to the community. The resident can in some cases feel anxious about returning to work with the public after having experienced isolation that is associated with homelessness, in cases years of isolation. We don't believe that "just going back to work" is always the best option for some in homelessness, especially if the individual needs to make time for mental health services as a priority.
