How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
COVID-19 and the subsequent shutdowns severely impacted our in-person fundraising events. With postponement of several planned fundraisers, we projected an $80,000-$100,000 of loss revenue, a total of 20% of our budget. This projected loss, while significant, has not minimized our ability to deliver services to women veterans other than the amount of financial assistance we award to each client. In effort to continue to best meet the needs of our warriors, we reduced the CEO’s salary and decreased staff hours while awaiting approval for state and federal stimulus funds. Since then, we were approved for the federal Paycheck Protection Program through the CARES Act and have raised significant funds to support program and organizational growth.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Women veterans reported concern over their financial futures, the impact of shutdowns on their income and ability to afford bills, and getting sick. We saw an increase of 15% in clients seeking financial services and resources. We developed our Women Veterans Emergency Services to provide personal fiscal stability to our women veterans through financial stipends to offset rent, utilities, and other emergency expenses. Our Emergency Services have less stringent financial requirements so that we can assist woman veteran facing financial crisis in the wake of COVID-19. These stipends are keeping our women in their homes and jobs by assisting with rent, groceries, and childcare. To address the other concerns expressed by our clients, we also launched an online webinar series to educate them on relevant topics like managing stress, financial planning, and creating wills.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Since 1920, our programs have prevented homelessness and enhanced the economic wellbeing of women veterans and their families. Our Women Veteran Transition Services have historically allowed us to fulfill our mission to serve women veterans so that their next mission is clear and continues to impact the world. Through our financial stipends, we assist women veterans that were working or in school as they transition from military to civilian life. Immediately following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we rapidly adapted to the changing environment to respond to the needs of our community. We surveyed our clients, shifted our programs to meet the new and most immediate needs of the women veterans, and shifted to remote work to protect our staff and clients. Having operated in a hybrid of remote and in-person offices for the past few years, we seamlessly transitioned to meet the needs of our veterans both efficiently and effectively.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
During the national emergency and beyond, we continue to: • Provide emergency financial assistance stipends to women veterans and their children to address their changing needs • Provide timely and relevant information with our partners to educate our clients and maintain a sense of community amongst women veterans during COVID-19 • Disseminate information on local resources for free food distributions and children’s lunch programs • Provide available tele-health and mental health resources to our community • Survey our clients to monitor trends so that we are best prepared to assist with emerging needs and concerns

Our board and team members engage in advocacy on all levels and regularly speak to media, associations, and community groups advancing our mission.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Our women veterans and their children were at risk prior to the pandemic. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation have only exacerbated these risks and severely impacted this already vulnerable population. At the onset of COVID-19, we conducted monthly surveys to monitor the impact on our community. The results revealed our clients were afflicted with low job availability, layoffs, reduced hours, and increased financial and emotional challenges. This especially impacted women exiting the service who were looking for employment and veteran mothers who were forced to homeschool their children while attempting to maintain their careers or pursue educational goals. In response we launched Women Veteran Emergency Services program reducing barriers to accessing our financial services. We eliminated our previous employment prerequisite to allow women veterans experiencing unemployment, furloughs, or lack of child-care induced resignations to seek financial assistance to ensure their basic needs were met. We expanded our programs to include two warehouse locations and began distributing cost-free critical items like diapers, wipes, formula, and essential household goods to provide immediate financial relief and ensure our women veterans and their children have their most basic needs met. We also extended our childcare assistance program to provide a deeper impact over the course of 3-12 months, allowing our veterans to return to the workforce confidently and/or pursue their education while allowing them to build emergency and savings funds. We recognized our capacity must simultaneously grow to sustain our already accelerated programmatic growth. We hired additional program staff, as well as a Director of Community Partnerships. These positions allow our organization to generate innovative solutions and further develop our revenue streams to meet the increasing needs of the women veteran community.
