Restavek Freedom

Mission

Our mission is simple: end child slavery in Haiti in our lifetime. "Restavek" is a Haitian Creole term for a child who is given to another family, most often to perform labor in exchange for shelter and an education. Unfortunately these children are too often exploited and never receive the promised love, care, or education. The U.N. has defined restavek as a form of modern-day slavery. Every action we take - whether it is freeing children who are in restavek, engaging and educating families about the harsh realities of the practice, or spurring community leaders to effect permanent change across the country - is done with this goal in mind. Restavek Freedom was founded in 2007. It now has 75 employees in seven locations across Haiti, supported by a small staff in the US in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Restavek Freedom has joined committed Haitians in the audacious vision of eliminating restavek child slavery in our lifetime.

Goals

1.At least maintain 1700 children in the Child Advocacy program. Offer a complete range of services at the current seven project offices/ learning centers.
2.Continue upgrading our website and software systems to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Execute our capital campaign (public phase comes in the second half of 2026). Assist a Canadian affiliate nonprofit in launching. These will create additional G&A/ Fundraising costs in 2025 and 2026 that will create strong return on investment for many years to come.
3.Expand child sponsorships in specific, and general fundraising overall, to ensure the diversified support of in-Haiti programming and increase the number of children protected.
