Mission: Cathedral Kitchen's mission is to help people out of food insecurity and champion their pursuit of stability and prosperity.
Cathedral Kitchen is one of the largest emergency food providers in New Jersey, serving more than 100,000 meals a year. We provide nutritious meals and groceries for food insecure residents of Camden and the surrounding area through our Meal Program, Community Outreach and MarketStand. The Culinary Arts Training Program is a 15 week tuition-free program, offered three times a year. The program consists of classroom instruction in culinary/baking arts, plus ServSafe training, like skills, financial literacy and interviewing skills training. Graduates are assisted with job placement and over 85 percent of graduates find employment during the first three months following graduation. In addition, we have two social enterprises as well as supportive services.

Cathedral Kitchen is a 501(c)(3) organization, with an IRS ruling year of 1998, and donations are tax-deductible.

The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Prior to the pandemic, revenue from our social enterprise, consisting of contracted meals, catering, the CK Souper Van, and the on-site CK Café’ had provided nearly 50% of the organization’s total income. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a 17% reduction in the social enterprise revenue for 2020 compared to 2019.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Due to social distancing, we adjusted our Meal Program from an indoor dining service, to an outdoor, take-away service for 200 to 300 guests per day, six days per week. The Culinary and Baking Arts Training Program was seriously impacted by the pandemic. Initially, the class that was in session was suspended. Because culinary job openings were greatly reduced, we re-designed the training program to target similar jobs that were in demand, such as positions with grocery stores. The 5-week Job Essential Training Class ran in September and October. We relaunched the Culinary Training Program in March 2021. Like many dental practices, we were forced to suspend our Dental Clinic in March 2020 and then permanently close in October. Patients were referred to two nearby clinics.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We added choice grocery and personal hygiene programs, increased our food outreach into the community, and increased case management for our meal guests. We formed new outreach partnerships with churches, food pantries, and non-profits serving low-income families and seniors to distribute these meals. Despite the challenges of delivering critical food and personal care supplies during a pandemic, these program expansions have been a CK success. Since the pandemic began in March, we have increased our outreach by more than 35% compared to the same period last year. We are now preparing close to 3,000 meals each month for our outreach partners.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We launched a weekly personal hygiene product distribution service and a market stand where guests can select free groceries.

Describe an investment in leadership

One of the goals of Cathedral Kitchen's strategic plan which was completed in July 2020, is training about the impact of trauma. The clients we serve and some of the people we have employed have experienced a significant amount of trauma which affects how they think and behave. Being trauma informed helps manager better mage their staff, it helps staff work together better and it helps us to better serve our students and meal guests. Over the past year, Cathedral Kitchen invested in a series of trauma informed training for all staff.

We have formed new outreach partnerships with churches, food pantries, and non-profits serving low-income families and seniors to distribute meals and groceries. We have increased the number of partner organizations who attend the meal program on a regular basis to provide services and counselling for our guests. Cathedral Kitchen's Board of Directors scheduled a series of phonathon evenings to thank donors for their support during the pandemic. We have an active presence on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Cathedral Kitchen participates in a collective impact initiative to address food insecurity in Camden. We participate in a community network that addresses issues surrounding food insecurity in Camden.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


While many other organizations temporarily or permanently closed due to the pandemic, Cathedral Kitchen’s Meal Program remained open. The preparation of the meal and how it is served was completely redesigned. We have continued to adapt operations to best meet the needs of our clients while also adhering to social distancing and other safety precautions due to COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, our Meal Program was supported by 180 volunteers per week. At the onset of the pandemic, we were no longer able to host our volunteers, leaving current staff to run the entire program. To support social distancing as much as possible, staff was divided into two teams that rotated weekly between working remotely and working on site. The reduction in staff and elimination of volunteers resulted in an increased workload and staff needed to learn new jobs. The split teams, each working three 10-hour days and then off for three days, was tiring physically; and emotionally, staff members were scared about their exposure to the virus while infection and death rates soared in the region. The staff adapted, supported one another, and successfully met the challenge. Necessity created a more cross-trained staff, with a better understanding of the organization’s operations. The pandemic has been an enormous strain on staff. In response, we have contracted with an employee assistance program that is offering onsite counseling and support to our staff. In addition, self-care has become a primary focus along with morale boosting activities. We’ve brought in a grief counselor for small group and individual counselling sessions, and have leaned on the support of volunteers who have donated staff lunches and other tokens of appreciation.
