Vision

For over 55 years, High Country News has produced incisive public-interest journalism about a region that spans 12 states and hundreds of tribal nations. It is the go-to source of reporting on the West — from small towns and rural communities to thirsty and fire-prone urban and suburban areas, we cover Westerners’ complex coexistence with sublime landscapes, scarce water resources, and rich natural ecosystems. Our ultimate measure of success is our positive and lasting impact on the region we serve. We believe that durable change only comes with an informed and engaged public — a community of people who push for progress and hold the line. We are journalists, yes, but on a deeper level we are community builders. Our aim: to strengthen and build a West-wide constellation of community and nonprofit leaders, scientists, journalists, agency staffers and policymakers — and give them the information and tools they need to drive positive change.

Goals

1. 1.We aim to get our award-winning journalism into the hands of more policy-makers, more students and a broader, more diverse audience of people who love the West and seek positive change.
2. 2.We plan to strengthen and diversify our business operation with larger reserves, enabling us to make bigger investments in staff, the publication as a whole, and reader satisfaction.
3. 3.We are focusing on our core beats - or areas in our journalism - to issues specific and critical to the American West, but relevant to a larger audience.
