Describe an investment in leadership

Holt regularly engages with industry-leading professionals to teach and educate on best and current practices in areas to support leaders including; strategic planning, security and privacy, non-profit protocols and procedures, social services and family support, and equitable marketing and social media management. One specific investment was Holt’s engagement with an external consultant to develop Holt’s Theory of Change over the past 7-12 months to assist with effective change management. The program and services leadership team participated in 12 hours of meetings with significant pre and post-meeting activities. Our leaders are now better equipped to lead our teams through significant upcoming changes in our processes and reporting, driven to some extent by a change in our technology platform. Our executive leadership team engages with leadership and strategic planning experts, and participated in a Work of Leaders workshop in March 2022 using the DISC assessment.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Holt partners with state, local, and international governments to ensure children are placed with qualified families. Holt’s social services team partners with other child-placing agencies to ensure children can be placed in states where Holt is not licensed. Subject matter experts at Holt partner with the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development to provide training to families, other agencies, governments, and partners in the countries where Holt works. Through social media initiatives, Holt creates awareness and educates the community at large about children who need assistance around the world. We provide opportunities for individuals to positively affect their live of children and their families through child sponsorship, monetary support, adoption, or prayer. Holt staff present at adoption conferences on a variety of topics, and our CEO serves on the national board of an adoption advocacy organization.

Around the world, one of the greatest stressors on children and families is the closure of schools to help contain the spread of COVID-19. School closures endangered children and elevated their risk of hunger, child labor and early marriage. Staff and partners launched innovative responses to keep children safe and learning while quarantined. In India, Holt’s partner Vathsalya Charitable Trust provided online education resources to the more than 300 children who attend their daycare and informal school. Another partner Bharatiya Semaj Seva Kendra set up a digital device library and held online summer camps for children. Finding creative ways to keep children learning and supporting in new ways was central to our response. A cornerstone of Holt service model is the holistic care our staff and partners provide to children and families in our programs — care that involves regular home visits, counseling, trainings, and social work support as each family works to become stable and self-reliant. To continue this same level of comprehensive, case-managed care during the pandemic, teams adapted in unique and agile ways. We worked directly with a single mom caring for her two children and two nephews in Battambang, Cambodia. Before she enrolled in our family strengthening program last year, she considered placing her nephews in orphanage care. After Holt Cambodia helped her expand her small business, she began earning a more stable income. But when schools closed in Cambodia, she lost her source of income — and had no way to support her children. To prevent families like hers from falling into crisis, Holt immediately responded with emergency food assistance. And, to help families more holistically, Holt social workers also continued both remote and socially distant face-to-face visits with families in case-managed care, allowing Holt’s teams to identify the unique needs of each family — and develop plans to address them.
