Mission

The mission of the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is to protect and advance the rights of adults and children who have mental disabilities. The Bazelon Center was founded in 1972 and envisions an America where people who have mental illnesses or developmental disabilities exercise their own life choices and have access to the resources that enable them to participate fully in their communities.

1.People with mental disabilities live with autonomy, dignity, and opportunity in welcoming communities, supported by law, policy, and practices that help them reach their full potential.
2.Individuals with mental health disabilities at all income levels have access to the core set of community mental health services that will enable them to live and work independently in the community.
3.The Bazelon Center advocates for adults and children to receive the supports and services they need to thrive with the goal of avoiding an inferior education or job, hospitalization or incarceration.
