1. Provide a compassionate, innovative animal shelter and companion animal resource center.

As part of our mission, we invest in future animal welfare leaders. UVHS is currently funding a Veterinary Technician training program for a member of our team. This is a modest financial investment when we know this person is a leader and there is such a shortage of certified technicians. This is a win-win for the person, the organization, the animals, and the profession. Additional investments in staff include webinars, conferences, and work with industry associations.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
UVHS actively raises awareness of the needs of pets and their people in the Upper Valley. When trying to increase awareness of our free pet food pantry, we rented a small but highly visible store front and we now distribute approximately 30,000 lbs of pet food each year. We are also members of our state humane federation that works on policy and partnership issues for the benefit of animals.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
One adaptation in the last year is that we changed our adoption model. During COVID, we moved to a model of "adoption by appointment." This was a massive change for us - we had previously had a "retail" model wherein anyone could come during our open hours. None of us thought appointments would work. In the last year, however, we have centered our adoption process around appointments because they work. Through this method, we are adopting more animals and having fewer returns! It's incredible!
