Middle East Forum

Mission

Founded in 1990, the Middle East Forum (MEF) is a think tank that seeks to define and promote American interests in the Middle East. It defines U.S. interests to include fighting radical Islam, whether terroristic or lawful; working for Palestinian acceptance of Israel; improving the management of U.S. democracy efforts; reducing energy dependence on the Middle East; more robustly asserting U.S. interests vis-à-vis Saudi Arabia; and countering the Iranian threat. The Forum also works to improve Middle East studies in North America. MEF sees the region, with its profusion of dictatorships, radical ideologies, existential conflicts, border disagreements, political violence, and weapons of mass destruction as a major source of problems for the United States. Accordingly, it urges active measures to protect Americans and their allies.

Vision

A Middle East at peace with itself and the West — free of radical Islam, terrorism, and the Iranian regime's tyranny, anchored by a secure Israel accepted by its neighbors — and a West whose institutions, freedoms, and public discourse are safe from Islamist influence.

Goals

1.Translate MEF research into federal policy through MEF Action and the Washington Project: delivering expert testimony, and driving enforcement outcomes, including terror designations, sanctions on the Iranian regime, and rescission of federal grants to organizations tied to terrorist networks.
2.Scale MEF's investigative and educational programs, including Islamist Watch, Campus Watch, Focus on Western Islamism, and MEF Observer, and expand the Iran Freedom Project's support for Iranian civil society, growing open-access publishing, primary-language research, and a media presence of 300+ appearances a year.
3.Strengthen the Forum's long-term capacity: diversify revenue and grow the donor base, invest in secure technology for investigations and field operations, and build staff and fellowship pipelines, including the MEF Junior Fellowship, so operational capability keeps pace with mission demands.
