Founded in 1971, the CCO (Coalition for Christian Outreach) has partnered with over 25 denominations to reach hundreds of thousands of college students with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our vision is to see a generation of college students transformed by the power of Jesus Christ and His Gospel, in partnership with the local church, reaching the world for the glory of God.

Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Donations to our organization declined by 3% in our 2019-2020 fiscal year and were up from there by 1% in the 2020-2021 fiscal year (September 1 to August 31). We had to cancel or move to virtual our major fundraising events. However, our comprehensive campaign, begun in 2019, provided a buffer and the PPP loan enabled us to fully employ staff.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

All aspects of our programs were affected: campus staff reached out to college students and held many virtual meetings, gatherings, and conferences. Partner churches moved to services on line. Staff training, supervision, board meetings, and donor meetings were all held virtually. Some fundraising events were cancelled while some moved to a virtual platform. Our largest student conference, Jubilee, was held virtually in 2020.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Campus staff and students used social media to reach out to new students. They used zoom, FaceTime, and other platforms to have one-on-one meetings, small group Bible studies, and large group gatherings. They often ended up not just ministering to students, but also to their families as many students were sent home. Some campus staff took groceries and meals to internationals and other students who were unable to go home. Attendance at some campus Bible studies and other meetings increased as students were looking for things to do and social outlets. The format made many students feel more at ease. Student leaders stepped up to invite and to lead the increased number of small meetings. Jubilee, our largest student conference, reached people across a wider geographic area than when held in person. Large group trainings, conferences, and fundraising events took place on YouTube. We were able to offer at no cost a greater number of resources to our staff, partners, and donors.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Staff will continue to hold some meetings virtually so that students in other parts of the world can participate. We will continue offering on-line training and resources to our staff. Supervision across a wide geographic areas will continue to have a virtual component. And some part of conferences and events will include pre-recorded pieces, whether a student story, guest speaker, or other entertainment.

Students in CCO ministries reflect the greatness of God’s Kingdom people from every tribe, nation, and tongue, saved out of sin and death, empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out the public implications of their personal transformation in every sphere of life. They love Jesus intimately, view the world Biblically, live obediently, join in Christ’s restoration of all things, and invite others to do the same. They become the next generation of leaders in the Church for the life of the world. Our communities are deeply changed because, in and through this generation of college students, the world meets the living Christ.

Professional Development Cohorts for staff members launch at the beginning of the academic year. Small groups of CCO staff form a learning community committed to developing the skills needed to more effectively serve college students. The Cohorts for 2021-2022: The Bible and Theology in Color Biblical Excavation: Women in God's Story Church Partner Engagement Core Communication Foundational Biblical Literacy Revisiting College Ministry Post-COVID CCO staff, leadership, executive leadership, and the Board of Directors have been trained in Diversity, Equity, and Belonging. Organizational leadership teams are reframing how to work together, with facilitation from an outside consultant. Leadership development of campus staff members involves giving some of them organizational leadership experience while they continue ministry on campus.

We invite stakeholders into the mission: to observe various campus ministries, experience Jubilee, and meet staff and students involved in the ministry. We invite staff, students, and student alumni as speakers at events. We invite volunteers into the mission: to assist ministry on campus, staff the Jubilee conference, and organize fundraising events. We invite partners into the mission: we invite churches, community boards, and other organizations to partner with us, to experience Jubilee, to use CCO resources, and to attend and invite others to attend events. We engage students in volunteer and leadership opportunities and mission trips, work cooperatively with other student organizations on campus, train community boards and churches in ministry, and collaborate with campus mental health professionals and administration. Our staff members present at Jubilee and outside conferences such as Wilderness Education Association, and Christian Community Development Association.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


The how changed, but the what and why remained the same. Our staff figured out creative ways to continue connecting with students—calling, texting, FaceTiming, hosting Bible studies via Google Hangouts and Zoom video calls, and reaching out in tangible ways to students. Virtual Bible studies around the country drew record numbers of students—students who never accepted invitations to attend in-person Christian gatherings on campus were hungry for connection and thirsty for Truth. And our training department resourced our staff to engage with students to help them create a rule of life during these disorienting times. How did we do campus ministry without campuses? The same way we always do: We trusted God. We trusted God with our lives and with the life of our world. We sought the health and welfare of our communities, following the practices set up by our churches, health officials, and governmental systems. We put our hope in a Savior who took on our infirmities, made the blind to see, touched the lepers, and conquered sin and death. And we continued to share this hope with others. Experts say there are still tough days ahead of us with this virus. With that in mind, we are encouraged to live lives that are so remarkably steadfast in this time of uncertainty that others would not be able to help but wonder at what keeps us steady. We take heart and remain confident in Him. May the Lord work through us all as we seek to love Him, love college students, and care for our communities.
