Nuru uses SCOPEinsight to evaluate the professionalism of its farmer organizations. SCOPEinsight assessments are tied to a standardized 90+ indicator system and linked to a database with over 4,000 comparable farmer organizations. Nuru relies on regular external evaluation of its farmer organizations by a SCOPEinsight certified assessor to ensure that farmer organizations are becoming increasingly sustainable for the long-term and consistently offer value to their farmer members. In 2021, Nuru invested in having some of its Ethiopian staff members trained and assessed in evaluating farmer organizations as certified SCOPEinsight assessors. This training solidified local staff’s knowledge of farmer organization professionalization and equipped them to evaluate 10 Nuru farmer organizations and 2 farmer unions, supporting continued improvement and long-term sustainability of these entities.

Nuru has conducted research with the Ray Marshall Center at the University of Texas at Austin and with the College of William & Mary. Nuru partnered with Vitamin Angels in Nigeria to distribute vitamins to women and children in hard-to-reach areas of northeast Nigeria. Additionally, Nuru partnered with iCRA to offer Nuffic-funded training and experience sharing for organization leaders in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Nuru is a key member in coalitions such as the Movement for Community-Led Development and the Agribusiness Market Ecosystem Alliance. Moreover, Nuru partnered with several other entities to advocate for the passage of the US Global Fragility Act (GFA) in 2019. Nuru utilizes farmer cooperatives as a tool for community building, organizing, and training facilitation. Annual peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns support funding and raise awareness for Nuru’s mission. Finally, Nuru advertises locally in program areas and has a regularly updated website and social media presence.

Nuru focused on building resilience at the household and community level for rural farmers in fragile areas. Additionally, as an organization, we intentionally support the resilience of staff. COVID-19 and all of its knock-on effects were a litmus test of the resilience-building activities, policies, and programs that we already established, and it invited us into new ways of thinking about building partnerships, delivering training, and ensuring farmers have the resources needed to not only navigate unexpected shocks, but continue to increase their income and crop yields. As an example, in Kenya, Nuru impacted 2,660 farmer households, served 38 farmer cooperatives, and expanded operations into a new county. In Ethiopia, 7,475 farmer households were served, and farmers increased their crop yields by 77%. In Nigeria, 1,908 farmers were served through programming, they increased their crop yields by an average of 65% and their incomes by an average of 107%.
