How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

We had to cancel several major fundraisers and saw a decrease in revenue from those events. We also applied and received the PPP loan and thus were able to employ a full staff.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Due to Covid-19 we had to close our rotational emergency shelter program. We were able to establish a static shelter site but our rotational shelter program was completely shut down and still is as of Summer 2021. While we have been able to continue serving families throughout the pandemic, we have not been able to serve as many as when our rotational shelter was open.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We shifted resources and created a static shelter site at our transitional apartments. We also began offering case management and other classes virtually to keep everyone safe. We also employed no-contact meal delivery in order to keep our volunteers and client families safe.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Our virtual classes and certain case management sessions were much easier for our families to participate in because it eliminated the need for transportation and child care. We are continuing to offer our Keys to Good Tenancy class virtually to better serve the needs of our client families.

We are a United Way partner agency and work diligently with other local non-profits to collaboratively respond to the needs of our community. We partner with local colleges and universities as well, working to train up the next generation of leaders in our field.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Our organization faced a great challenge in March of 2020 when our rotational emergency shelter closed due to the pandemic. We immediately moved our families in shelter into apartments (traditionally reserved for our Transitional Housing program). Through creativity and technology we were able to continue providing meals, case management, and even a little fun to all of our client families. When all of the summer camps in our area closed for the summer of 2020, we created Camp Adventure. This month-long, two-day-a-week camp allowed the children in our programs to safely participate in fun summer activities and allowed the parents of these children to pick up additional shift at work, rest, or work with a case manager on their current goals. We moved fundraisers online and managed to not have any decrease in revenue in third and fourth quarter 2020. We have not wavered in our mission and have continued to serve families throughout the pandemic. We even added several additional locations through our local partnerships, including a new Transitional House donated by Clayton Homes.
