What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
Team and board members are working continuously to develop more connections with other education advocacy groups across Afghanistan. Our programs rely on connections with on-the-ground advocacy groups to provide programs in the country. Sahar team members regularly speak at conferences and present a quarterly Zoom round table about the situation in Afghanistan to all interested. Recently, the Programs Manager spoke at the Juno World Affairs Council. In 2024, the Operations & Finance Manager is already slated to speak in front of the World Affairs Committee for a Seattle organization. Sahar is actively promoting the cause and mission through social media, marketing, and traditional media. In 2023, Sahar was featured in the Seattle Times and on the local website for the Seattle NPR station. Sahar trains the teachers and leaders who present course materials within Afghanistan and develops curriculums to ensure the programs are useful to the students in the communities we serve.

Sahar began as Journey with an Afghan School, a group founded to build bridges of understanding between the U.S. and Afghanistan for peace and cooperation in 2001. Through 2021, Sahar expanded: building schools, and computer centers, and managing teacher training programs in Northern Afghanistan. Sahar became a stand-alone non-profit in 2009 in order to expand and continue our efforts. Sahar has worked in this war zone for over two decades to increase the status of girls and women in Afghanistan through education, enabling them to participate actively in the social, political, and economic arenas in their communities. In late 2021, the Taliban took over Afghanistan and Sahar was determined to continue helping girls and women in the country.
After the Taliban banned formal education for girls above 6th grade, Sahar found innovative ways to promote girls’ access to education in Afghanistan. It is now more important than ever to show up for girls’ education in Afghanistan in any capacity possible. Since 2022, Sahar has been conducting secret schools in Afghanistan for girls and women.
Over the past 18 months, Sahar has started 3 new programs, partnering with 2 new organizations to further the mission and provide education and empowerment to more women and girls despite strict bans in Afghanistan.
