The Haven of Transylvania County

THE Haven provides shelter to men, women and children who are experiencing homelessness. We provide a comprehensive program that includes access to mental health counseling, case management, showers, kitchens, internet access, mail service and telephone messaging. Our guests are screened in advance and are expected to complete goals in their effort to move to permanent housing.

Continuing education for our staff has been a primary focus this last year. Any classes, textbooks, and workshops have been paid for and approved for any staff member to grow.

The Haven was part of developing the Round Table meeting for our community to educate other agencies on what resources are available. This meeting takes place once a month. Social media and speaking engagements educate the homeless issue in our community. The Haven is a member of the Steering Committee that helps advocate policy changes and support persons with lived experience of homelessness. The Haven assisted in a group of all the non-profits in our county to meet monthly for each agency to fellowship, support, and be knowledgeable of each other's fundraisers, grants, and events to coordinate efforts and to not duplicate services.

The Haven had to let go of outside volunteers and hire a full-time staff when COVID hit to reduce the number of people coming in and out of the shelter to protect the most vulnerable that reside at the shelter. This was a very large financial decision and relies on the support of the community.
